Lung transplantation

A new research model in lung transplantation

This video sequence shows our novel research model of an orthotopic single mouse lung transplantation model that provides us with valuable information for the investigation of new therapies to improve the transplanted lung and for a longer survival of transplanted recipients.

You can appreciate the preparation of the left lung from a donor mouse, which is  prepared with plastic cuffs so that it can be implanted telescopically into the recipient mouse. All operation steps are carried out under a microscope with 40x magnification. This operation procedure almost mimicks the human transplantation setup.

At the end of the operation the now connected blood vessels and airway are opened, and a viable lung transplant is available for the test of new therapies.
