Smoking prevention and smoking cessation
Students event for smoking prevention
Together with a senior physician of pneumology we started a project for smoking prevention in students in the year of 2009.
We invite to these events infrequently (depending on the demand about approx. 4 to 5 times per year) school classes of the last primary level or 1st to 2nd secondary level or high school and inform about the anatomical and physiologic aspects of the lung/respiration as well as about the influences/damages caused by smoking. The aim is to reach children in the sensible phase, at best before starting to smoke, not to shock, but to inform them insistently.
We try to remain the effect in small groups in order to encourage children to ask questions. Thus we "teach" the classes separately, i.e. in the first lesson an interactive lecture with presentation, anatomical models and a short film, in which we show a healthy lung and a smoker's lung. In another hours we offer a pulmonary function test and patient conversations.
The events each take two hours with a break. At the beginning and the end a questionnaire for anonymous control of knowledge and what the students have learned is distributed. It is important for us that this is not remaining a one-time event but that the topic is also included into the classroom teaching.
